You will be able to:
Describe the three elements of self-compassion
Analyze strengths of characters in films, and ourselves
Analyze the impact of self-compassion on protagonists in two films
Use self-compassion to consider a current struggle through writing
"Self Compassion" invites participants to practice the elements of Self Compassion as modeled by Dr. Kristin Neff. Participants will begin by reading an overview of self-compassion and its core elements, using this foundation to frame the experiences of the films' protagonists. The first film explores a man's acceptance of his own authentic story, and the second follows a group of artists as they navigate the complexities of gender identity, community, and mental health. The session concludes with a guided writing exercise, inviting participants to practice self-compassion in a meaningful and personal way.
Note: This class includes supplementary materials that can be completed at the start of class or assigned as homework. If assigned as homework, the class duration may be approximately 15 minutes shorter.
